Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students need, and greatly benefit from, added support in many areas to reach their potential within a school day. It is my ongoing desire to provide them with effective support and to create an environment of higher learning for ANY child.
I have 10 bright, passionate and spirited students who are my JOY to work with everyday.
The progress that they are able to make during the time they are in my class is remarkable. Because I teach four grade levels, Kindergarten through third grade, in one room, we naturally grow into somewhat of a family unit. The older students take the younger students under their wings and the younger students look to their older friends for help and support.
The various levels allow for various opportunities to teach, which, as we know, is the greatest way to learn. Our classroom is a team, TEAM 44, as is emblazoned across the first wall they see when they walk through the door. We all unite in goal setting and achieving together, as a class, and I am constantly renewed by the never-ending progress of my incredible students. Every step toward a desired goal is a success, and we celebrate each other along the way.
My Project
As a special needs teacher, I am seeking out new sensory stimulation strategies to assist my students in their academic achievement and focus, every day. Molding clay, sensory bins, foot rests, chair cushions, weighted vests, I employ many strategies to find a balance between being calm yet energized. The chairs that my students sit in for 5 hours a day are not conducive to their myriad sensory needs, or anyone's really!
Adults make sure that the chair they work from is as comfortable as possible, and if we are uncomfortable, we are distracted by our discomfort. Imagine adding to that distraction a clinically diagnosed attention disorder and 9 other people working right next to you, in the same room! Balance ball chairs have been tested in classrooms across the USA with incredible results! I would love for my students to gain stimulatory benefits while they work rather than allowing them breaks FROM sitting down to seek that input elsewhere. These chairs are just what my students need.
After reading the studies about how beneficial these chairs can be, especially for students with sensory needs or who are hyperactive, I contacted some companies about possible donations and was not met with good news.
Although I do put a lot of money back into my classroom, this is a cost too great to bear alone. The funding of this project will improve our entire school day. My students, their parents and I will thank you!
