Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a small 6-12th grade school with a college prep focus, located in a low-income community where students face many challenges in their world outside of school (community violence, drugs, sexual exploitation of minors, gang activity, etc.). Our school is a beacon of safety and hope for our students, where they hear daily that they can create their own future if they try hard and take school seriously.
Our students are hard working and driven, and will freely tell you that they are on their way to college (most of them being the first in their families to do so).
We have a unique design that gives students multiple experiential opportunities to learn, as well as intensive supports that allow them to succeed at high academic levels, even when they enter our school with skills gaps. Our caring staff goes above and beyond to make sure our students reach their highest potential.
My Project
Students will get the opportunity to experience wilderness and build community with each other. We will teach students basic backpacking skills including packing and carrying their packs, back country cooking, leave no trace, and more!
Our students will be able to push their own boundaries and get outside of their comfort zones.
Most of our students have not gone camping or spent much time away from their families. They will not only be spending lots of time outside, but in wilderness areas that will teach them about relying on themselves and resilience.
Students will experience Yosemite National Park, one our country's most beautiful and impressive places. They will get to bond together without the distraction of cellphones and social media. Students will gain an appreciation for the outdoors and for backpacking.
