Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend a large urban bilingual K-8 school, with a ninety-four percent poverty rate, fifty percent special education population and ninety percent English Language Learners. My classroom is a bilingual classroom in which all students receive ESL class every day.
Despite these statistics, our school is exceeding expectations on the state report card and have maintained a high attendance rate for more than five years straight.
We get high marks on our climate ratings by staff, students and families due to our trauma-sensitive focus, ability to go above and beyond in meeting our students and families' basic needs, and use of strategies to help students cope.
My Project
Our Bilingual learners need hands-on materials to be able to learn in Spanish and English. I have request materials to organize my literacy and math centers. These materials will help my students to develop early literacy skills, word fluency, comprehension skills, writing skills and math skills. The Beginning Sounds Family Engagement Pack and Letter Identification Family Engagement Pack is important because it enables beginning readers to figure out how printed text is associated with the spoken language. Having a mastery of letter names can make learning letter sounds easier for young readers. The sounds of many letter names are closely related to the sound the letter sounds. The Jumbo Magnetic Ten Frames and Magnetic Counters are helpful in teaching children basic math skills such as counting, sorting and patterning. I also requested basic supplies such as Kleenex tissue and First Picture-Story Composition Book to be prepare and keep children motivated and excited. Studies show that children having school supplies of their own can improve grades, creativity, attitudes towards learning, behavior, peer relationships and self-image.
