My school is located in one of the lower income areas of my city. About 51% students receive free or reduced-price lunch. 31% of the students are Caucasian, 49% are African American, and the remaining percentage are a multitude of ethnicities from all over the world.
My students are eight and nine year old balls of never-ending energy.
It can be a challenge for them to sit still and learn for longer periods of time as the school year progresses. They love interactive activities and hands-on projects.
These kids have the potential to be anything they want to be. It just takes time to get them to believe in themselves. I believe they will thrive in a classroom that has more hands-on math and reading manipulatives.
My Project
Basic school supplies can be hard to come by, and even harder to replace midway through the year when they've run out. I believe having pencils, colored pencils, scissors, dry erase markers, and glue will help my students be the best learners they can be.
Pencils will help with everyday writing.
Colored pencils will allow for creativity to blossom on their work and free play time. Students go through glue sticks crazy fast. Having glue sticks will help students keep their interactive notebooks organized and crafts nice and neat. Dry erase markers are essential when students are playing review games in class, showing answers for daily questions, and practicing writing. Scissors seem to get lost or misplaced all the time. Having extra pairs on hand will ensure that everyone gets to actively participate in their learning.
