Axolotl Therapy and Stress Relief for High School Spanish Students

Help me give my students sensory strips for calming under stress (like learning a new language) and sensory toys that even high schoolers are not ashamed of using when feeling out of sorts. Axolotls are favorites from Mexico.

My Project

I bought 2 axolotl stuffed animals last year as classroom decor. I think they are super cute, and they are from Mexico. Little did I know, the most vulnerable students gravitated towards them and liked having them at their desks as they worked. I mentioned this to the school counselor, and she indicated that the students were selecting them as calming tools and stress relief.

Another tool introduced to me by a colleague was the use of calming strips on the tables or on student Chromebooks.

These allow students to seek outside stimulation and reassurance under stress. Spanish does cause a lot of stress to many of my students with high needs. Having these available made it possible to empower kids to soothe themselves and stay engaged in learning.

I would like to restock the calming sticks for a new year of students who will benefit from them. I also would like to add to the Axolotls who are mini therapists in the room. Some are stuffed and cuddly while others allow for manual manipulation and fidgeting. These were a hit last year, so much so that I sent a student with a lot of anxiety home with one for the summer. I’d appreciate being able to have these cute little guys available around the room. Every classroom can be therapeutic in small ways, and these are two ways I’ve found that work in high anxiety Spanish!
