Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title 1 High School, and I have a diverse group of students. My students are 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders, and all of them share an inspiring curiosity about the world.

I strive to make the world within my four walls, safe, comfortable, flexible, and inspiring.

I am the Academic Decathlon coach, and I'm lucky to have a class period dedicated to our studies. I teach 9 AVID, which is an effective program that gives students the structure to succeed beyond high school, into college, and beyond. I also teach 12th-grade honors and spend a great deal of time working on getting my students ready for college.

My Project

High School Literature Circle Library

Every year, my 9th-grade AVID class participates in a student-led literature circle project.

The books I have chosen are high-interest YA fiction and the students may choose the group they would like to join.

Giving students a voice in their education facilitates life long learning and curiosity. They have weekly reading assignments and come together, ask questions, and share their ideas and connections. The students become comfortable reading and speaking in small groups which is a valuable life skill.

Finding multiple copies of popular YA novels is difficult because they are frequently checked out of the library.

I thank you for your support!
