I teach students with autism in 3rd-5th grade. Having autism leads to impairments in social interactions, language, sensory regulation, and behavior. When given the right supports to meet these needs, my students do very well academically. Though the majority of my students use a device to talk, they are eager to communicate and socialize.
In my classroom we focus on functional communication and independent living skills while also working on academic goals individualized for each student.
My philosophy is to see the ability in each child and build on their strengths rather than focus on limitations. We start early to work on skills that will be most beneficial to helping them become as independent as possible.
“It takes a village to raise a child. It takes a child with autism to raise the consciousness of the village,” Coach Elaine Hall.
My Project
We are requesting thera-putty, bouncy bands for chairs, a magnetic sight word sentence board, sight word puzzles and more. This project will help my students meet sensory and academic needs. There are items to engage them in active sensory breaks and hands-on academic learning.
The activities included in this project are geared towards increasing students' independence, as well as helping to connect academics to functional skills.
Students with autism greatly benefit from learning through hands-on activities. Additionally, generalization of skills is often a challenge for students with autism. Teaching using multiple types of activities helps them to better generalize. Additionally, breaks with activities that will meet their sensory needs helps them to better focus on their academics. This project will help cater to individual learning needs of each of my students.
