This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school serves a diverse and urban population full of passionate and creative thinkers and learners. As students transition back into the school building after virtually learning, they are hoping to learn all that they can to help them prepare for their future and life after high school.

My Project

Our next unit in grade 10 English is to read a novel written by a woman or person of color who helped to change the face of literature. The novel, The Color Purple, by Alice Walker fits this description perfectly as it fits not just one criteria, but two! Because of this, I need additional copies of the novel, so students can take their own copy home with them.

It is my hope, that by reading this novel, my students will be exposed to literature by people who look more like them.

I also believe that this is a book that students can get into because it was written within the last century unlike so many other texts that are in our curriculum. The language of the novel makes it more accessible to the more reluctant readers and the fact that the chapters or "letters" in the novel are short, make the task of reading this novel less daunting.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
