My Project

Our first grade class is going to be doing a unit of the solar system as part of our reading and listening comprehension skills. My students are already eager to learn about the solar system, astronomy and the planets.

First graders are more engaged in their learning when they can touch and use hands-on materials.

Reading comprehension can be a difficult skill to master so we put an emphasis on listening comprehension as well. Over a few weeks, the students will be hearing a series of stories pertaining the to solar system and astronomy. This topic is usually very engaging so it provides them with more opportunities to master comprehension skills.

Things like inflatable planets, a model of the Earth, stickers and pictures will be great for them. I can already see them passing around the planets and putting the stickers on sentence strips.
