Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Although we are an arts focused school most of my painting students have never painted until they enter my class. Drastic budget cuts have severely limited opportunities for art in elementary and middle school. Painting opens up a new world of exploration for them.
Most of my students are first and second generation immigrants from Mexico, Central America, Korea and the Philipines.
Most come to the school with an interest in art. Others don't. I try to shape my class so that it challenges students of all abilities by combining solid technical skills with the opportunity to add their personal touch to their assignments. In my recent end of project reflection (a surreal still life) students commented on their growth: 'Now I know that there is never just one color in any object","Painting takes effort and commitment". "I have never painted until this class, and I learned that I love it". "I learned that painting doesn't have to be photographic reproduction, that it's okay to see the brush strokes.". I like that we were given the chance to do something different."
My Project
My students need basic primary color acrylic paints for their Painting 1 class. From those colors we can go anywhere. Nothing can happen in the world of color without the basic primary colors. These basic colors allow me to teach a full semester curriculum of painting, starting with expressive experimentation with abstract color, to fine tuning their observation skills mixing and blending colors for realistic interpretations of still life, landscape and portraiture. "Lessons learned" are all applicable to lessons for life. My students learn that it is better to make their own colors and values, rather than squeeze it out of a bottle or tube they also understand they should "create it yourself, don't have others do it for you". When I urge them to look carefully at what they are painting, it opens up their eyes to the colors in shapes in their everyday lives, making them more perceptive and sensitive to the world around them. When I ask them to sketch several ideas first they are learning about exploring options. When they must finally settle on an idea and carry it through, they learn persistence.
By supporting this project you are helping young artists open up more than a world of color.
You are giving them raw materials for life long learning not only in the arts, but helping them develop those 21st century skills we all talk about needing: critical and creative thinking.
