Most of my students are first and second generation immigrants from Mexico, Central America, Korea and the Philipines. Most come to the school with an interest in art. Others don't. I try to shape my class so that it challenges students of all abilities by combining solid technical skills with the opportunity to add their personal touch to their assignments. In my recent end of project reflection (a surreal still life) students commented on their growth: 'Now I know that there is never just one color in any object","Painting takes effort and commitment". "I have never painted until this class, and I learned that I love it". "I learned that painting doesn't have to be photographic reproduction, that it's okay to see the brush strokes.". I like that we were given the chance to do something different."
