My Project

I am always looking for new learning opportunities for my students and have, unfortunately, not studied many non-western dance forms. My students regularly take a class in ballet, modern, jazz, and tap, but they would relish the opportunity to learn a new form like African dance. Our virtual class with Hayiya would enable them to Zoom with an African dance expert, and they will learn both the history of African dance as well as dance movement.

The history of African dance is intertwined with some of the dance forms they have already studied, and this opportunity would allow them to extend both their historical and technical dance knowledge.

Tap and jazz dance were both heavily influenced by African dance, and students will have the opportunity to examine how African dance influenced those forms.

For my International Baccalaureate students, interaction with different forms of cultural dance is a required part of their coursework. It is difficult to have a truly meaningful experience with these forms using just video and written descriptions.

Having the Hayiya Dance Theater teach a virtual class and Zoom with students would expand the knowledge and understanding of all of my students as well as help those IB students fulfill one of their course requirements.
