Help me give my students planners, paint by number kits, tote bags, and other materials and supplies that will enable them to express themselves during art therapy.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are amazing and they are trying their best to overcome numerous obstacles during these uncertain times. My talented students are doing their best to overcome both their academic and social-emotional challenges. The students at my high school come from diverse backgrounds, many represent low socioeconomic statuses, and reside in an urban area. When they are at the point where they doubt that they can not overcome a challenge or find a solution to a problem, it is then that I remind them that diamonds are made under pressure.
My Project
Many of my students feel overwhelmed and pressured by the hectic world we live in and these uncertain times. To help my students I decided to engage them in art therapy and provide them with social-emotional resources in the form of a calm down corner. Art therapy can be defined as an application of the visual arts in a therapeutic context. Art no matter whether you choose to create it yourself or simply enjoying observing it is a relaxing and inspiring activity for many people. However, the particular benefits of artistic expression and art therapy go much further than relaxation and enjoyment. Studies suggest that art therapy has mental health benefits and can be very valuable in treating issues such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and even some phobias. It is a great therapeutic way to express your emotions without words and process complex feelings.
You don’t necessarily have to be an artist to experience some of the therapeutic benefits of practicing art therapy.
My students will participate in art journaling, sketching, making collages, sculpting with clay, etc. It doesn’t matter what media we choose. The only thing that matters is that they feel comfortable and acquire skills to manage their behaviors, process feelings, reduce stress and anxiety, and increase self-esteem. Students will also express their creativity by making self-soothing sensory items, designing backpacks and t-shirts, and creating vision boards.
