The colored pencils, markers, and other craft materials we were able to purchase are now the center of student activity in which they solve mathematical tasks and illustratively depict their work, either through drawing number lines or pie charts or collages of geometric shapes. A personal favorite classroom experience was the time the students were working with various colored materials to construct arrays and demonstrate graphically the facts connected with multiplication in order to manifest abstract ideas.\r\n\r\nSuch projects in mathematics have enabled the students to investigate the concepts of symmetry, patterning, and measurement through cutting, coloring, and forming shapes. The practical approach is not only helpful in reasoning math, but also it develops fine motor skills, endurance, and collaboration. We hear students say a lot about how much easier and more enjoyable math becomes when they get to use colorful arts materials to mold and shape what they are being taught.\r\n\r\nIn the future, students will expand on such experiences, creating displays of math art that are dedicated to future concepts such as fractions, tessellations, and graphing. Through such activities, they will be able to make mathematical relationships come alive on paper, solidify problem-solving abilities, and have enhanced curiosity and confidence in mathematics.
