My 9th-11th-grade students are resourceful and expressive artists. This year they are taking Painting, Drawing, and 3D Design. Most of the students I work with speak English as a second language—more than 80% come from homes where Spanish is their primary language—and 20% require Special Education services for emotional and/or learning challenges. More than 80% of students qualify for free lunch, which is an indicator of living in poverty. Our first graduating class will be in 2018 and it is our goal to graduate 100% of our students and to ensure they have multiple pathways to succeed in the future. That’s a mighty task since New York City’s graduation rates are low, particularly for its most vulnerable learners. My students need resources for quality Arts Education that and can help break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and low expectation in northern Manhattan!
My Project
These materials will help our HS students work collaboratively across curriculum to learn Studio Art, Woodworking, & Computer Science skills.
We completed our first successful prototype this year.
Our goal is to have old school Arcade style games, "Artcades" designed, built, and sold by students over time.
Students will also be installing their own original games with Raspberry Pi and Arduino technology for other students to test. This collaborative project can also lend itself to other disciplines over time. For example, students could make war games based on Global History or Math games to practice Regents testing. The carpentry skills they will carry with them the rest of their lives. The materials we're requesting will also be used for other air brush and design projects.
