My 9th-11th grade students are taking Painting, Drawing and 3D Design classes. They attend this NYC public charter school for children in northern Manhattan, Washington Heights and Inwood. My 11th graders were the very first class of 5th grade students who came to our school when we opened the doors in 2010. We serve grades 5-11, growing a year until we reach grade 12. Many of my students came to the school 4 to 5 years behind their peers. Most of my students speak English as a second language80% are from homes where Spanish is their primary languageand 20% require Special Education services for emotional and/or learning challenges. Our first graduating class will be in 2018 and it is our goal to graduate 100% of our students and ensure they have multiple pathways to succeed in the future. That's a big task since NYC's graduation rates are low, particularly for its most vulnerable learners.
