This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
It's amazing what a child can accomplish with just a handful of art supplies. At my school, students are encouraged to embrace their creativity; yet with budget cuts, there are limited supplies allowing them to meet their full artistic potential.
My students all come from immigrant Hispanic families in North Carolina and attend a public magnet school with an emphasis on arts integration.
Together, they make up a beautiful, vibrant group that loves to paint, draw, and imagine! In their grade-level classrooms, they get whole-group instruction from amazing teachers. In my pull-out ESL classroom, they are active learners participating in predominately literacy activities. In this small-group setting, their diverse backgrounds and experiences are validated through storytelling, dual language, and various other language-based activities.
These activities are best supported when combined with various art projects that reinforce the importance of creative expression and help students better retain what they learn.
My Project
The supplies I am requesting in this project may seem very basic. They range from construction paper to glue to child-sized scissors. But without the funding for this project, my students won't have access to these everyday items.
With these classroom supplies, my students will be able to invent new endings to stories. They will be able to create their own novels, explore new channels for artistic expression, and support their own language development through arts integration. The walls of my classroom will dazzle those who enter with colorful and lively student work. These supplies will allow the school year to start off on a positive note and enhance classroom crafts and projects throughout the year!
Given the right tools, I feel confident that my students will embrace their inner artist.
Their language exploration will be supported by arts integration, and their cognitive development will be stimulated through creative expression. My students and my classroom will benefit in a huge way from this basic list of supplies!
