Art and children can be a delightful experience! I work with students that have developmental, cognitive, and environmental delays. We are at a low income school and the majority of my students do not have the opportunities or materials at home to experience art activities. When they are given paints, crayons, glue, scissors and even pencils, their faces light up at school. Art encourages development in all areas and studies have shown that children who do not experience art do not do as well academically as those who have had many experiences in art. Children need to develop an awareness of color, form, line, shape and texture, and art encourages this. In art experiences children use reason, invention, observation, discrimination and problem solving skills to form their creations. Art can be an emotionally satisfying by revealing thought, ideas and emotions. Art also encourages self confidence and esteem when work is praised and admired. Art helps children develop skills in working cooperatively through sharing, recognizing, and appreciating each person's unique expression. It also allows children to work and create as an individual without assistance. I've watched children who haven't learned to write their own names produce a complex story with pictures. I see them learning how to think. I see them ponder. I see them learn how to make their own decisions. They are figuring the thing out. No one is telling them the answers. They are learning that they are persons who can produce answers both meaningful and expressive. I see them feel pride. I see them becoming aware of their own bodies and their minds. Children who have frequently experience art when they are small become very smart adults. Their minds have the ability to deal with conceptualizations. We want this for all our children, but we need the materials to provide them with this experience. I have chosen materials that could be integrated with our reading and language activities. These materials would be a wonderful addition to our Art Center and would provide many hours of creativity and learning for many years. Children get so excited to take their work home and they are so proud of what they do. Please consider funding this project and help develop the minds of children and give them something they can be proud of. They will be used for year after year and be available for all our students.
