My students need good literature about a variety of people so that we can start a unit on "great works". We are going to be studying biographies and incorporating art.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income/high-poverty school, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they come to school ready to learn and eager for new experiences. I strive to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students love to create and express themselves through art.
We need some basic school supplies and art supplies to supplement our curriculum.
Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control heir home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
We are starting a unit on biographies and would like to incorporate art and artists into it. I am also working on adding to my leveled classroom library to encourage my readers at all levels to read. We have been without a school librarian since school started and therefore my students have only had access to the books in our classroom.
Doing helps us learn.
I want my students to be able to create some of the art they learn about while studying artists and other great thinkers.
We will be learning about Frida Khalo and self portraits, Henri Matisse and collages, and many more.
