My students have limited to no access to the computer and the internet, and this time is really challenging for them. Many students are learning by sharing a cell phone between their five siblings, relying on learning packets provided by our school district, and free lunches being dispersed at a drop off site. Our kids already had challenges related to basic needs, and during the pandemic, these needs have dramatically increased. This has added a lot of stress on the students and families I serve.
My Project
My students are creative, imaginative, and have wonderful ideas. This time is really hard for them because they do not have the same access to educational materials other kids do because of socioeconomic barriers. This project will give my students access to some of those rich creative experiences.
This project will give each one of my students a kit to foster their creativity and support engaging learning experiences through the arts and sciences during distant learning.
These kits were selected based on my students' individual interests. I selected car building kits for my students who are interested in physics and mechanics of cars. I selected origami kids for a few of my kiddos who are always folding paper into various games during class time. I selected comic book templates for kids who are interested in being illustrators one day.
Once the project is funded, the kits will be included in a care package for each student. The kits will be delivered to my students' homes to take away the barrier of transportation for families. I will frequently ask the students about their experiences with the kits through the communication we are having through video chat or letters when kiddos do not have access to technology. This project will have endless possibilities and continue to build relationships with kids and foster their well-being during this difficult time.
