Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach art in a preK-8 high needs urban school which serves a Hispanic community in Michigan. We are a public school and our focus is two-way bilingual immersion in English and Spanish. We have over 600 students.

We are interested as a school community in making cultural connections with public schools in Mexico, in order to exchange information on how the Mexican Bicentennial will be celebrated both here and there. This will be an art and writing exchange, and the writing will be in both English and Spanish.

My students will make prints to show their cultural heritage and what they value about their ties to Mexico. I will take these prints with me on my trip to Mexico and give them to my contact teachers in seven selected cities. Students in Mexico will then send their pictures back to our school.

You will make it possible for my students to learn more about their heritage and to have an artmaking experience that will bring rewards as they receive replies to what they have expressed in their writing and prints.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
