Between wrapping up the end of the school year, organizing all the new books for the library, and allowing kids to check them out I lost track of this as summer vacation approached. Nevertheless, I wanted to make sure I said THANK YOU for helping to support our mission to get our kids off the computers/tablets and reading physical books again! It has been such an amazing thing to witness the excitement/joy of being able to check out books they're interested in. \r\n\r\nSince we opened the school library end of April-end of May we have had over 200 books checked out by students! We even created a wall titled \"Estrellas de la Biblioteca\" (Stars of the Library) where students were able to put their name on our wall once they completed a book. The students were extremely excited to be able to put their names on the wall and were eager finish the next book for another star.\r\n\r\nWith the new school year approaching we have been fortunate to continue to see our library grow over the summer months through various donations from community members. Between your generous donations and the continued generosity of others wanting to see more kids read we are looking forward to starting book clubs with the kids so they become critical thinkers with the text they read.\r\n\r\nAgain, from the bottom of my heart thank you so much for generosity and on behalf of the students I get the privilege of working with everyday, thank you!!!","fullyFundedDate":1746456846497,"projectUrl":"project/books-on-books-on-books/9270329/","projectTitle":"Books on Books on Books!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Ponce","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp618002_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1725711038470","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/618002"},{"teacherId":618002,"projectId":9245895,"letterContent":"Wow! I still cannot believe how the DonorsChoose community stepped up to fund our library project. When the project was fully funded within a matter of a few hours my colleagues asked me to do another because we were so blown away by your generosity. So again, thank you from the bottom of my heart, my coworkers and most importantly, THE KIDS!\r\n\r\nOnce the majority of the donations came in we gathered the 3rd graders who helped us create the list and started unpacking. Their excitement was palpable as we opened box after box of the new books in Spanish for them to read. Excited so much that they were fighting over who got to check out which book first. Some even started reading right when they found their perfect match, instead of helping to open more boxes and clean up, hah.\r\n\r\nIt has been an amazing feeling to watch them pick out a book with excitement and to see them throughout the school day giving me updates about what page they were on. Due to your generous donation we were able to purchase 4 different sets of soccer goals for our teams across both of our school campuses. As I shared on my project page, every fall out soccer program has a team in each grade K-8 playing in addition to our high school team. That is over 130 kids actively engaging in physical activity and learning sportsmanship everyday.\r\n\r\nWhen I got the call from the front office that some packages came for me I instantly jumped up from my office to see which goals had arrived. With the help of our Dean of Students, we quickly assembled the 2 small goals for our kids at our lower elementary campus. Then as the rest of the shipments came in I immediately contacted some of the parents of our team to see could come help assemble them to surprise the kids. Immediately 2 dads offered to come help and showed up to start assembling as I was holding practice. Even though the parents assembling the goals were not far from our practice, the kids had no idea what was happening. Once I saw one goal was completed I called a student over and asked if he could see what was in the distance. Once he saw the goals and realized he started cheering and ran to his teammates. Just before he told them anything he asked for permission to tell the others and when he told his friends they were all screaming with excitement.\r\n\r\nOnce again, thank you for your generosity and support for our students. As I shared in my project description, soccer is our school's passion/sport. In our district soccer is broken into different divisions (K-2, 3-4, 5-6, & 7-8) and every year AOA has anywhere from 2-3 teams represented in each division because we have so many kids passionate about the sport and staff/parent coaches wanting to give as many kids the opportunity to play. \r\n\r\nThis year we had 9 teams across grades K-8, thats one team per grade and a total of over 120 students actively engaging in physical exercise with their peers every week. In addition to practicing with their peers, some of the kids even came to extra practices to help coach and train the little ones (and really to help me). Every week I had a faithful crew of my 5th graders waiting after school to start the kindergartners in their daily warmups and stretches before teaching them various skills. In one of the photos you'll see our 5th graders playing with the kinders using the soccer balls and nets your donations purchased. \r\n\r\nOur success of keeping soccer alive is because of donors like you who continue to invest in youth sports and specifically invested in our kids and families. As a social worker, I am constantly looking for ways to create opportunities for students to be the leaders and teachers to younger students. This year I was successful at creating one of those opportunities and despite how chaotic coaching 15 high energy kindergartners can be...I look forward to doing it again next year and beyond with the help of my older kids. Again, thank you for your support and if you donated to my other project where we successfully purchased over $6,000 worth of soccer goals you will get to see more pictures of the kids using the materials you helped purchase as well as the new goals.","fullyFundedDate":1725828331071,"projectUrl":"project/grab-the-gear/8712565/","projectTitle":"Grab the Gear!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Ponce","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp618002_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1725711038470","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/618002"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_59980","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":495,"numTeachers":41,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":3,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":93,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 3","studentTeacherRatio":"12.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":61.4,"schoolId":59980,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Academy of the Americas Logan on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Academy of the Americas Logan","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/michigan/detroit-public-schools-community-district/academy-of-the-americas/59980"}
