Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

What if there was a book that gifted kids could read that would not just entertain and educate them but help them understand who they are? There is! I would like to get a class set (35) of the novel The Mysterious Benedict Society. I am teaching an elective class for gifted students at our middle school I'd like to read a novel as a class so we can do a serious literary analysis. I teach in a low income, high Spanish-speaking area where few of the kids have access to novels at home. Our school has a library but it is rarely updated with new books and few of our kids are even aware they can check out books. I asked our librarian if we had any class sets of books I could use for my class and was told we only had "The Giver" which our English classes already read. I want to provide my class with a reading experience that is both challenging and exciting. This book fits the bill perfectly! It is a mystery/adventure story written specifically for young gifted kids. The characters in the story all have many of the "quirks" one finds in young gifted kids. They are smarter than their peers (and in many cases their elders!), they have unique interests, they watch the news, etc. They are recruited by a mysterious organization to help discover The Truth through use of their talents. This concept of "The Truth" (that there is something more to know than just what we see) is a theme I had planned to use in the class before I ever even heard of the book. It is just so perfect! The book also has puzzles throughout the story that readers can solve along with the characters in the story. I had a ton of fun reading it myself and saw much of myself in the characters and I know my gifted kids would do the same. These kids often feel awkward due to their differences to other kids at school and seeing "themselves" as heroes in a book would be a great experience. It even uses some high level vocabulary within context (as gifted kids also tend to do!) so my kids will come away with further reinforcement in that way as well. I intend to use these books with my gifted class and then give them to our school library to be used by other classes as well (our AVID classes I think would love it too). So often schools at the secondary level overlook their gifted kids and I want to see that changed. These are the kids who will be our future leaders. I want them to start thinking!
