I teach AP Statistics to traditionally disadvantaged high school students at a charter school in a major southern metropolitan area. All of my students have elected to take AP Statistics in the hopes of earning college credit and preparing themselves for post-secondary education. My students have high aspirations, and I am committed to engaging them in this difficult course and helping them be successful!
Additionally, I have quickly learned that my students are drawn to technology, especially since their access to tech is extremely limited.
In order to capitalize on their interest, I have started recording my lectures and letting my students watch the lectures in class. This can be tricky at times because very few of my students have phones, and our school only has four Chromebook carts for teachers to check out.
Nonetheless, my students are showing up every day and working extremely hard. They just took their first exam, and they did awesome! I'm so proud of what they have accomplished so far, and I can't wait to see where the rest of this year takes us!
My students love using technology in the classroom, especially because the majority of my students do not have access to tech outside of the classroom. About half of my students have phones, but the rest are at a real disadvantage when it comes to accessing educational resources.
Our school is a low-income Title 1 school, and we only have four Chromebook carts to share amongst all four grades.
It is difficult to consistently access the existing school technology, so I am hoping that I can obtain 15 tablets to keep in my classroom.
Students will be able to use these tablets to watch additional lectures and tutorial videos. I record all of my lectures, so students will be able to watch and re-watch lectures during work time. Students will also be able to access desmos activities and additional interactive applets specifically designed for AP Statistics.
