Anyone Can Cook, You Just Need the Right Equipment!

Help me give my students have the opportunity to have the equipment needed to learn how to cook the basics and make nutritious meals.

My Students

My students range from those with a variety of Special Needs, those who are English Language Learners, with some having just arrived in this country, to the student who has not learned how to do tasks on their own. My classroom is mostly hands on where I try to help them learn to cook and understand nutrition so they will make good choices as they feed their growing bodies and get the energy they need to make it through the day.

Many of my students get 2 meals from school each day and take home food from our school pantry to ensure they have food over the weekend.

But often times they don't understand the basics of cooking and nutrition to get basic supplies and turn them into a meal. Often they are not used to how to cook the food and supplies they are given because it is different than what they normally use at home.

My Project

Everyone needs food to survive and provide energy. Learning the basic cooking techniques and nutritional needs is a skill that will help my student their entire life. Many of my students are refugees and new to the food and how to cook it. But even if they are not new to this country many have not learned the basics of how to cook and are not getting the nutrition they need. They are rely on processed or prepackaged foods because they do not know how to cook them. I want to be able to teach my students how to cook nutrition dense foods that will keep them healthy and help them as they grow and live on their own. I also teach my classes the proper sanitation and hygiene to prevent sickness or illness when you cook and prepare food.

I believe that anyone can learn how to cook, and if you are given the right equipment the possibilities are endless.

As you can imagine with over almost 200 students using the equipment each day that is a lot of use so the wear and tear is high. We purchase all of the ingredients so purchasing new equipment is not a priority. Learning how to cook and clean is not just a skill they need to pass the class but a skill they need to know to survive in life. Having the proper equipment and knowing how to use it will set them up so success in and out of the classroom.
