Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 12th graders are the epitome of excellence. The first generation of students to receive a full year of distance learning instruction, my English 4 superstars have grown tenfold since August.

Their literary prowess and determination — coupled with ever-increasing confidence — are a testament to what can be accomplished by students under any and all circumstances.

Unwilling to let covid or political strife define them, all five classes of these emerging adults have truly taken learning to heart.

From our Social Media Socratic Seminar to our Adnan Syed Mock Trial, they compose with equal parts passion and integrity — the very traits they will no doubt carry with them from La Habra High School and into the "real" world.

They light up the room with their smiles and laughter, and I just know they will light up the world with their ideas and endeavors.

My Project

In the second semester of our college and career readiness course, students have been delving into the intricacies of social justice through debates, seminars, and grassroots research projects. As their interest in 21st century civics grows, we've begun exploring themes of redemption and criminal justice reform through the novel "Just Mercy."

Analyzing antiracist narratives dovetails into our upcoming Senior final project in which my ethnically-diverse 12th graders will craft a multimedia anthology to tell their own intimate experiences around social justice.

With the help of iPads, students will use ISTE-informed softwares like BookCreator and Anchor to write, record, and design powerfully diverse personal narratives. Through the creation of a class-wide collection of autoethnographies, students will enact inclusion and antiracism.

As we shift back to a hybrid classroom, it is critical that my students without phones and computers have access to these devices — which will empower them! Working together on the iPads will promote the very problem-solving, digital citizenship, and collaboration skills that make restorative justice possible in the 21st century. Learning to navigate technology to make their voices heard is how the next generation can effect real change.
