My Students

I don't know which my students love more: working with their hands or using technology. The best way to engage them is to mix the two! Claymation movies have fascinated young people for generations. Now it's my students' turn to create masterworks that will teach about recycling and saving energy!

Our rural school, which is heading into its fourth year, aims to engage students through project-based learning and technology.

We are in a high-poverty area, but what we sometimes lack in resources, we make up for in enthusiasm. We will be moving into a new building this winter, and the excitement is growing! We want to be the greenest and cleanest school around while teaching others how to conserve resources, save power, and help the planet. I look for ways to link real-world learning to what goes on in the classroom, and like to empower my students to make a difference. As a result, they have become more aware of the impact they are able to make in school, their community, and the world. Interdisciplinary projects such as this one make it easier for students to tie all their learning together and be even more engaged. When learning is hands-on and linked to their own lives, students remember.

My Project

Students will use these cameras and equipment to create claymation videos as part of a joint project between environmental science and drama. In drama, freshmen will learn to create a unique character using voice and facial expression; in environmental science, they will research ways for our school and community to go green and save energy. Using claymation, they will meld what they have learned in both classes to create a humorous public service video in which their "green" character gives tips on recycling and conserving the resources of planet Earth. At the end of the project, our animation festival will bring students, parents, and community together to celebrate creativity! The videos will also be on display for the many visitors who come to see our school's unique style of learning. But we won't stop until we share all this green-ness and greatness online too!

As we move into our new school building, we want students to become more aware of the importance of going green.

We plan to launch a school-wide campaign and hope the claymation projects will raise awareness. Parents will become more aware as well, after seeing student projects at our Animation Festival. Knowing they have made an impact on their community will have an equally powerful impact on freshmen. They will know they can do more than change themselves - they can change the world!
