This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Kids love animals and therefore this topic provides the perfect theme to motivate my students to create “All About” books on the animal of their choice!

I teach eighteen ELL third graders in an inner-city public school.

Over 85% of my students are on free and reduced lunch and come from homes in which English is not the primary language spoken. They are eager learners, but need high interest learning opportunities to become fully engaged.

My Project

Soon, we will embark on a special writing project in which each child will create an "All About" animal book. These magazines will not only provide students with a valuable resource for their projects, but will also help to reinforce the concepts being taught during this unit, like comparisons, table of contents, pictures with captions, tables, maps etc. All of these concepts will be expected in each individual animal book project. This project will provide the high interest learning opportunity needed to keep my students motivated and engaged. The finished products will be provide a lasting memory of the project and evidence of their learning.

According to the publisher, "Zoobooks is the all-in-one, everything-you-wanted-to-know-but-didn't-know-who-to-ask guide to the world's most fascinating animals, birds, reptiles, and insects." Thus, these magazines will provide the perfect resource to help my students complete their "All About" animal book project.
