Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are all English learners who possess great resilience and a desire to learn. These qualities are what allow them to face challenges in their new environments and succeed in and out of the classroom.

Our school and the DonorsChoose community help my students build and maintain a healthy and secure sense of self.

Where before students struggled to identify themselves as readers, they now have come to understand (with the help of resources like graphic novels) that not only can they read, but it can be fun, too!

Ever since I joined the Donors Choose community, students I haven't personally taught have learned that I have “good books” and so my consideration of who “my” students are has expanded. While I love being a book-pusher and having the books students want to read, equally important to me is having the resources that will support and guide them on their educational journeys.

My Project

Our school is a little world in and of itself with over 1,000 students and over 56% of them identified as English Learners. I regularly collaborate with teachers in grades 3, 4 & 6 thinking of ways we can best support our students.

The items in this project will help me share materials with colleagues to create anchor charts and concept charts to support student learning.

These teacher created resources (often alongside students during lessons) will help support vocabulary and concept development as students will have these tools as reference points in the class. The adhesive strips and magnetic tape will make these charts easy to display on all classroom walls--including our cinder blocks ones!

Having these materials will help enable me to work with colleagues to co-create engaging, colorful and purposeful charts to improve student outcomes across content areas. From math vocabulary (think numerator vs. denominator in fractions), to language arts concepts (like plot diagrams) to history (interactive timelines) and everything in between, these resources will support it all. Thank you for supporting my classroom and school!
