My Students

My students have all faced their fair share of challenges- that's why they are at our school, a discipline placement campus. These students are often in trouble, not because they are "bad" kids, but because they never really became engaged in school.

All of my students are considered high risk of dropping out due to having an alternative school placement due to discipline issues.

Our school has over 75% of our students on the free and reduced price lunch program (meaning they are at or under the poverty line). For many of these students school isn't a priority either due to necessity, like needing to work and help support their families, or choice, such as being disinterested. Many feel that there is no way for them to go to college so they don't even try.

My Project

In my anatomy and physiology class it is a struggle to do the large dissections required of the curriculum since our equipment is meant for small and simple dissections in biology. This not only makes the assignments difficult to complete, but also unsafe. To get into this anatomy class my students have to show success in previous science classes, and are very motivated. I don't want that motivation to go to waste from not having proper resources. I am asking for safety goggles and gloves to make the lab safer, as well as more advanced dissection kits and large trays to allow for the more precise cuts.

These materials will allow students to succeed in science, and hopefully become more motivated in school.

Even knowing that the anatomy class is doing these dissections motivates some of my younger students to do well in science in order to get into that class.
