Do you remember the first time you had real success in the classroom? Some of my students have not yet had this feeling due to learning disabilities, but they also have never been able to use technology to their advantage.
I work in a resource classroom where the children come in for part of the day.
They are very loving and eager children, who want to learn and please everyone. The problem is that they have disabilities such as autism or other learning differences that make this a very difficult challenge. They attend an elementary school with a very good reputation for high achieving students. They long to be one of the high achievers and work hard to be better students.
My Project
Being able to use an iPad in the classroom with these students would enhance their ability to achieve higher academics. It would allow teachers to modify the materials presented into a format that is both motivating and compensates for their learning disabilities. For example, for those students who can have difficulties with fine motor skills for writing, they can dictate stories using a speech recognition application. If a student can not read a book, there are text-to-speech apps to help! It would help these students to achieve academic success and make learning happen in a fun environment.
There are applications for iPads for many other subjects! Math, geography, science, grammar, social skills--the list numbers in the thousands! As a teacher, I would customize learning for the children, using the applications to build basic skills while working on their Individualized Education Program.
Students would be able to use technology as an academic tool and not just a game.
Donations to this request would help these students achieve academic success and help raise their self esteem.
School would once again be a great place to go, and students will acquire both academic skills more quickly, and 21st century technology expertise!
