My Students
The students at my school come from many backgrounds, many dialects, many countries. Some of them are first or second generation Americans, and I feel that it is part of my job as a 5th gradeteacher to help these students recognize the true blessing they have to be bilingual, multicultural individuals.
In my school, I feel that many times the students are the ones teaching me about life, culture, and acceptance of others.
As a teacher at a STEM school, I have to find ways to pull the components of language, reading, writing, listening, and speaking into the STEM curriculum. Because the African American and Hispanic ethnicities are underrepresented in most technological professions, the students at my school need additional language supports and resources to help them make the connection between STEM activities and possible future career choices.
My Project
My school has one-to-one Chromebooks and we are a STEM-certified school aspiring to be a STEAM-certified school, so technology is integrated into much of the curriculum. Many lessons, videos, and projects require the students to listen to information presented on a digital platform. However, sound from the Chromebook speakers can be distracting when students are working independently or researching.
Having a class set of headphones will give all of my students access to the digital world.
I work in a Title I school, so many students do not have the resources to purchase their own headphones. Through teacher-led and independent activities, the use of headphones will allow my students to engage in quality digital learning.
