My Students

My students are a diverse array of around 550 kids from many different cultures, ethnic groups, and backgrounds looking to express themselves through music! Our school has a great presence of world cultures, covering kindergarten through fifth grade.

These kids are curious explorers who love to play instruments, dance, sing and be silly together.

My students are creative, and each brings his/her own unique perspective and personality to music class. Their individual interests also represent a variety of musical genres and instrumentation.

My Project

I am a second year teacher looking to provide a world music experience to my students in a socially distant classroom! We are working together to build our collection of instruments so my students can have a diverse array of experiences when making music. We need more xylophones in order to have this experience in a safe, socially distant way!

My students love to play xylophones, but we are limited on how often we can play due to lack of instruments and unequal numbers.

We currently have double the number of soprano to alto xylophones, making our ensemble sound very uneven. We need the alto voice in our ensemble! Additionally, we do not have enough instruments for each student to play their own. Rotating through instruments while taking turns takes time. With another instrument, we would be working towards a 1:1 ratio of students to instruments!

With a wider variety of instruments, students will be able to find musical opportunities that resonate with them. Another xylophone will not only allow me to give students a different way to experience music-making, but also will better round out our ensemble sound. Please consider helping us get another alto xylophone!
