This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a school Occupational Therapist with twenty-three years of experience in the school setting. Students have changed, and sitting still doesn't work for everyone. Classrooms have become more inclusive to students with different physical, sensory and cognitive needs. There are more simple options like a wobble stool or cushions to help meet the need for movement. For some students, that just isn't enough. Some students need to stand to work, but not all classrooms are equipped with an appropriate space for that. I have a couple of very capable, but very wiggly students who just need more. This desk would meet that need. The great news is that if they grow away from needing this support, there will be another student in the wings who will benefit from it, in perpetuity.

There are additional health benefits of standing to work.

Many adults now use standing desks and enjoy a variety of benefits. This desk is adjustable and can meet a variety of student sizes. It isn't a permanent fixture so it can move up with a student from grade to grade, room to room, or even building to building. It has needed storage for school supplies and a Pendulum fidgeting bar. The patented swinging pendulum footrest fidget bar lets students redirect excess energy and engage in continuous motion to help support ergonomic comfort and cardiovascular health. We live in a culture of very unhealthy children and adults. Screens have interrupted physical play. This desk can be a game changer for those kids who just can't learn seated. I appreciate any support to get a couple of my kiddos outfitted for success.
