My Project

Learning the basics of the piano keyboard is a crucial musical skill. Basic piano skills cross over into playing all other instruments. My students are very eager to play instruments. Most don't have access to piano lessons at home. Their only chance to get basic skills is in their weekly music class. As a STEM school, we fully embrace technology in all subject areas.

Combining classic piano training with modern technology and a STEM approach opens so many doors.

I currently use instrument centers in class to allow students a chance to hone their skills beyond full-class instruction. Students rotate between centers for music composition, music theory, ukulele, and recorders. I am able to rotate through and give small group lessons. I would love to add a piano center. Students can connect these mini MIDI controllers to their Chromebooks and use the shared piano program in Chrome Music Lab to hear themselves while they play.

Our current piano instruction is using a printout of a piano keyboard. This method is hardly ideal. With these MIDI controller keyboards, my students can not only learn keyboard basics, but they can connect to different music interfaces on their Chromebooks to compose their own music and create new sounds.
