We are a public, all-girls, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) middle and high school in Los Angeles, California. We opened in 2016 with grades 6 and 9, and grow a grade per year to eventually become a full SPAN (grades 6-12) school by the 2019-20 school year.
Did you know that girls within Los Angeles Unified School District perform at the same level or above their male peers in math and science while in elementary school?
And yet, their scores on standardized tests in math and science decline as they progress through middle and high school. Not only that, as students move through school, fewer girls take STEM classes than boys.
Our school is here to change that and our girls need your help! We welcome all girls within the school district who are committed to a highly rigorous, college preparatory curriculum focused on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
Teaching a science class requires so much equipment. I was able to borrow a lot of supplies last year but would like to have my own materials so that I can fit the labs in with content more cohesively. One thing I am particularly excited about for next year is a biotechnology lab in which the students will learn skills that are utilized in professional labs while learning about bacteria, genes, restriction enzymes, and cloning.
The largest item in this project is a water bath, this would be useful at both the high school and middle school level for years to come.
In addition to the water bath, I have asked for lab armor beads which are put in the water bath instead of water - this creates a cleaner, more efficient process. The last items are consumables that are constantly being purchased for our biology class. We really need the gloves for safety, the test tube rack for organization during labs, and the label tape to keep good practice. Thank you for supporting our classroom!
