I am a third grade teacher in an Equity + school in Winston-Salem, NC. Currently, 74% of our students are receiving free and reduced lunch. In my own classroom, 100% of the students are on free lunch, three are English as a Second Language students and six are receiving Special Education services. Most of my students say that social studies and science are their favorite subjects because they love experiments and learning new things. As an Equity + school, we have very limited science and social studies materials, which makes it a challenge to allow the children to experience all of the new concepts we learn. In third grade, we focus on the human body, and cultures and communities around the world. With this in mind, I am requesting a Continents of the World Activity Chest and a Continents of the World Photo Book Series. Both of these have pictures, maps, facts and manipulatives that will help the children experience something from each continent and culture. I am also requesting a classroom skeleton to help teach about the bones and demonstrate how all of the joints of the body work. My last request is a magnet kit that provides all of the resources needed to help children experiment with magnetism. I believe that these resources will give my class a special opportunity to continue their learning and to be exposed to a variety of science and social studies experiences. Thank you so much for your time and consideration.
