As they prepared for Battle of the Books, students practiced close reading, recalling details, identifying important characters and events, making connections, and thinking critically about what they read. Because the books were part of a competition, students were especially motivated to read carefully and remember the details that might help their team succeed.\r\n\r\nReading became a very social experience for our Battle of the Books students. Students read independently, but they also talked about the books with their teammates, compared their thoughts, discussed memorable details, and quizzed one another as they prepared for the competition. Having multiple copies meant that more students could read the same book at the same time, allowing them to share the experience and learn from one another.\r\n\r\nOur enthusiastic readers especially enjoyed having access to the complete Battle of the Books collection. Students who already loved to read were excited to discover new books, while other students found themselves motivated by the challenge of reading toward a common goal with their teammates. However, we were missing a dedicated home for bridging literacy to writing. The arrival of this writing desk was the final piece of the puzzle. It has completely redefined what \"writing\" means to my students—it's no longer a chore they do at their seats, but a special destination they choose to visit.\r\nHaving a physical distinction between our art center and our writing center has finally helped them grasp the difference between an illustrator and an author. Now, instead of just coloring on a page, they understand that they have two distinct jobs. They might start as an illustrator at the art table, but then they proudly \"travel\" to the writing desk to take on the role of the author. This can be what it is like for my language delayed students. When asked to elaborate or describe a number of things they can feel stuck and not able to complete the task. The Expanding Expression Tool (EET) has helped them to break the process down and even if they have never used the objects or seen it in person (e.g., skis) they are still able to generate some ways to describe the skis due to the EET. \r\nAny new materials are exciting, but materials that can be manipulated by the students and are fun to hold are extra-special. Both young and older students were excited to start using the EET and therefore made for productive therapy sessions. My younger students enjoy hold the EET and moving from one ball to the next as they describe their object(s). The older ones enjoy hopping from circle to circle utilizing the new EET steppers that work just like the hand-held tool to guide their responses when describing/elaborating on a target word or words. \r\nI'm so thankful to those of you who chose to support the development of language skills in my students.
