Alive! Discovery Center: Part 1

My students need a variety of live organisms (insects, crustaceans, and amphibians) to show different adaptations and simple materials (30 simple magnifiers and 40 petri dishes) to observe and appreciate the finer details of these wonderful critters.

Every morning, I await with great anticipation for my students to hang up their coats and bags outside of my classroom, say "good morning" as they meet me at the door, and come in to eat their breakfast and chat about their day. Many of my students depend on the school breakfast for their first meal of the day. They also have free lunch, and many stay for after school classes and events for a free dinner as well. A majority of my students speak another language at home, and they all come from a variety of backgrounds and have a wide range of abilities and strengths.

Most of my students do not come to school with just the basic supplies of papers, pencils, books, etc. Many of them do not read or have never been read to at home. They ask to borrow pencils or paper in order to complete homework or self driven projects. When some of their basic needs are being neglected, it becomes difficult for them to be focused on their school work. My classroom needs more to grab their attention and imaginations.

My intent is to create a corner of living discovery. I want students to come into the classroom with anticipation to discover what is new or changing with a variety of living organisms that they become responsible for. They will learn different life cycles, adaptations, as well as the basic needs that all forms of life require. The survival of the organisms will depend on the students coming to school every day. These organisms will also offer shared experiences that can bridge the differences and language barriers that exist between some of them. Their vocabulary will grow together as they learn more about the lives of their new critters. My students are excited about the idea of having animals in the room. We currently have a worm bin for composting our breakfast scraps that already has some student attention, but having more animals in displays that are more apparent, and having animals that are more complex would really engage students even more. Students from other classrooms will be able to come in and check up on our critters. My students will be able to share with others what they've learned as experts through journaling and student bulletin board displays.

If you support this project, my students will come in every morning with eyes and minds open just a little bit wider, and with a shared experience of growth that will overcome any cultural or language barriers that does exist between some. They will become a little more inquisitive and driven to do more work in order to learn the "why" and "how" of what they observe. They will be more engaged learners and better prepared to succeed as students and not think of learning as a means to pass the many state tests they face this year and every year. They will see learning as its own motive and reward. They will have the opportunity to see that science and nature aren't just things to read about in a book, but that it surrounds and includes them. They are an important part of life. I love my kids, and hope that you will give me the opportunity to provide them with the first part of this wonderful enrichment.
