Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As an Algebra 2 teacher, I have the unique opportunity to prepare students for higher level math courses, in addition to preparing them for college. At the end of the year, I want my students to be more confident math students and feel prepared as they head to college.
The students at Yes Prep North Central are predominately hispanic and low income.
Despite the low income status of my students, they have the drive to be successful in high school and beyond. I have conversations with students everyday about what they want for their future and they always tie it back to their family. They want to go to college and have little to no doubt that they will get there. The school is a family in itself, so the students know they have classmates, alumni, teachers and staff who they can have as a support system. They are absolutely tremendous kids who just need opportunities.
My Project
Algebra 2 is one of the first math classes that really uses calculators heavily. Students start to use more complex graphing functions which will be essential as they move on to higher level math courses. The TI Nspire calculator is what most classes use now, so I want to make sure my students are learning the same calculator skills that their future college classmates are learning. The calculators will be used as a class set (my school has provided 12, but my classes are between 26-31 students each). Having a class set will allow each student to practice on their own as opposed to having to share with 2-3 other classmates.
This project will lead to students having more individualized practice which will allow them to master calculator skills they will use in other math classes.
In doing so, they will become more confident which will lead to greater overall success and greater opportunities within math.
