My Students

My students are active participants who prefer to learn by engaging in experimentation and inquiry. I agree with Albert Einstein's philosophy of teaching: "I never teach my pupils; I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn."

My students thrive in conditions where they are given opportunities to ask their own questions, think critically, make mistakes, reflect upon these mistakes, and solve problems.

We are a small town with an enrollment of just over 700 students in our 7-12 school. We have built a strong, supportive community at our school. Even though many of our students come from low-income households and face many challenges outside of school, they always impress me with their willingness to engage in all of the classroom experiences.

My Project

My students spend most of their time in the lab, making measurements and collecting data. Several labs in 7-12th grade require temperature and absorbance measurements. The more precise and accurate the data, the better the students are able to draw conclusions and see patterns and trends in the data, allowing them to make connections to the natural world around them.

Many students struggle with collecting data using standard Celsius thermometers or simple color charts for absorbance, causing their data to be less accurate which will possibly lead to drawing the wrong conclusions.

The Vernier LabQuests, temperature probes, and Spectrovis Plus Spectrophotometers will allow these students to collect more accurate and precise data, which would lead them to identifying the correct patterns or trends in the data.

Students who are successful in the lab want to spend more time in the lab, where they are able to develop the science practices needed to be successful throughout their science careers. These interfaces and sensors will allow many students to get over a barrier while still allowing them to do all of the critical thinking and problem solving.
