Microscopes are essential tools for biologists. Cells are the basic unit of life but they can only be seen with a microscope. It is very difficult for students to grasp that life is built of these tiny structures, even if they see pictures of cells in textbooks. The saying "seeing is believing" is very true when it comes to students and cells. When students see their own cheek cells under a microscope, a whole new world opens up for them. They suddenly become very interested in cell parts and cell functions. Many students struggle using a standard compound microscope. They have difficulty focusing on the specimen, but eventually they master this skill. But even if they can focus the microscope, most students find it difficult to look through the eyepiece for an extended period of time in order to draw what they see. The goal of this project is to provide students who struggle looking through the eyepiece the opportunity to easily view specimens on a digital screen.
