Sand trays allow learners to physically trace letters and words, engaging tactile and kinesthetic senses to reinforce letter-sound correspondence and spelling patterns. This hands-on approach is especially beneficial for students with dyslexia or other reading challenges, as it provides an alternative pathway for processing and retaining information. By combining physical movement with visual input, sand tray activities make abstract language concepts more concrete, which supports memory retention and builds phonemic awareness.\r\n\r\nHeadphones, on the other hand, offer students a focused auditory experience that supports individualized learning. Whether listening to modeled fluency, phonics exercises, or text-to-speech reading passages, headphones help students engage in auditory processing without external distractions. This tool is particularly effective in reinforcing decoding skills and improving reading fluency, as students can hear and mimic correct pronunciation and intonation. Together, sand trays and headphones contribute to a rich multisensory environment where students access literacy content through visual, auditory, and tactile modalities, resulting in improved engagement, comprehension, and confidence in their reading abilities.","fullyFundedDate":1737661482720,"projectUrl":"project/reading-and-writing-access-and-support/9027552/","projectTitle":"Reading and Writing Access and Support","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Channell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4998598_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1673317208407","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-channell-mhs"},{"teacherId":4003859,"projectId":8881845,"letterContent":"Our students are using the vertical whiteboards to help explain their thinking and develop discourse skills. In math, making thinking visible is an essential part of all lesson plans. Without knowing the students' thought process when solving problems, it is more difficult to help students figure out where they went wrong if their solution is not correct. While students can show their work on paper, the whiteboards promote collaboration and discussion. We believe that this collaboration and discussion leads to deeper learning because students are required to attend to precision and use proper math vocabulary when engaged in academic discourse. \r\n\r\nA side effect of the collaboration and discourse is that students also gain confidence. They see that everyone makes mistakes and that mistakes actually help us learn. The classroom focus is shifted from getting the right answer to the thinking that went into solving the problem. And students are having fun in the process - they love writing on the whiteboards and not being confined to a desk!","fullyFundedDate":1731949876548,"projectUrl":"project/whiteboards-in-motion-making-math-visib/8881845/","projectTitle":"Whiteboards in Motion: Making Math Visible and Collaborative","teacherDisplayName":"Teacher DeMaria","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4003859"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_63828","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":722,"numTeachers":61,"percentFrplEligible":51,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":4,"percentWhite":70,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":12,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"11.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":66.7,"schoolId":63828,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Millbury Memorial Junior Senior High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Millbury Memorial Junior Senior High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/massachusetts/millbury-school-district/millbury-memorial-junior-senior-high-school/63828"}
