My school is a Title I school that sits in the heart of Washington, DC. I have a group of fourth and fifth-grade students who are fun-loving, eager to learn new things, excited about school and love to read. My classroom would be considered a melting pot of cultural heritage and social needs. Many of my students have been in the US for less than two years. They inspire me every day to do my best to address their needs.
To meet their needs, we incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, alternative seating, and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are!
My Project
Science is the systematic approach to solve a problem or answer an inquiry. Children, at heart, are natural scientists. For example, the other week, the students tested how small they could get their pencils and still write with them, and, as a result, I hid the electrical sharpener.
There are many problems modern day engineering is solving, and kids should have a chance to explore the process!
The 4m kits I've selected cover water desalination, alternative energy, edge detection, and fine motor movement. My hope is to have them serve as a jump off point to further research and design to improve on the kits' methodology. With Donor's help, we can bridge gaps to higher level engineering for young learners!
