Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students need a club that will allow them to socialize with regular education students after school. I have picked cards, tables, prizes to encourage participation and fun

Many of my special education students have an exceptionally hard time socializing.

Socializing out of their comfort zone is difficult. Socialization is an integral part of a child’s development. All my students love playing cards (Yu Gi Oh, Magic, Pokemon). This club will encourage socialization.

They mostly have limited social skills and seem to group together often. Our middle school is a safe, inclusive community where everyone is actively engaged in learning. Enrollment is approximately 998. Our site seems to have a great community of acceptance and large special education population with 11 classes.

My Project

My students are RSP / SDC, between a year and 4 years behind grade level. They lack the social skills and general social cues to create relationships outside their safe zone. Making friends and participating in social activities is important to a growing child, but how about children with special needs and special abilities? Their condition must not spare them from developing social relationships with the people around them. For one, interaction creates a positive impact to them psychologically and makes them feel a sense of belonging, allowing them to feel more involved in the larger community. My idea is to create a club special education students want to be a part of and encourage regular education kids to join as well. This club would appeal to a certain niche of regular education students who also have social issues. I would do this by creating beginner decks and offer prizes for positive things like attitude and helpfulness in teaching the game and make the club as positive an environment as possible. All who participate leave with something.

A student’s future can be determined in the things that they do in the hours after school and before their parents get home.

Extracurricular activities are a part of a student’s everyday life. They play important roles in students' lives. They have positive effects on students' lives by improving behavior, school performance, school completion, positive aspects to make successful adults, and social aspects. As teachers, we need to be aware of the effects that extracurricular activities have on kids.
