My Students

Reading is Fundamental! Many of my students have not experienced the power of being "hooked on a book". Over the course of the school year, I consistently read to them carefully chosen books that all teach a life lesson.

We are an urban school in the heart of Indiana.

Our school, amazingly, is not air conditioned. My students struggle to understand the power of an education. Please don't misinterpret my students' capabilities. My fifth graders last year had 95% of them pass our state assessment in Math and 90% passed in Language Arts. As I raise the bar academically, work with them in small groups during lunch, and have peers tutor them, they respond to my high academic demands. They truly epitomize what President Obama stated in his speech to them last year- "No Excuses!"

My Project

Well, my after lunch readings are extremely powerful! To watch 30 children hanging on every word coming out of my mouth (yes, boys, as well) will at times bring tears to my eyes. I only read books that I feel will teach a life lesson. My students need a copy of the book I read everyday after lunch to be able to follow along, which is a great way to increase your ability to read. BFG- Be kind to ALL! Wait til Helen Comes-Family, in any form, is important. Please recognize that many of my fifth graders have never completed a novel on their own-let alone understand the power of a great book. Watching the words on the page, as I read with the best expression I can muster, is incredibly transformational!

Clearly, the impact you will make is to give my students what is such a given to so many!

Answers to these questions: What is the best book you ever read? Who is your favorite author? What is your favorite genre? I am convinced this experience can truly create life long readers!
