Advancing Astronomy with Problem Solving on Mars!

Help me give my students the opportunity to read one of the best contemporary science fiction novels, The Martian, that will inspire them to engage in STEM broadly and Astronomy in particular, and to think like problem-solving scientists.

My Project

Students in my Astronomy class are exposed to all sorts of ideas that expand how they view the universe, and they relish the new perspectives they acquire during the year. When we learn about Mars and other planets in the solar system, they love asking questions about what it would be like to live on Mars, explore the surface, and what challenges humans would face and how they would overcome them. We end the unit by watching the movie, "The Martian", which is an entertaining and thought-provoking film, but lacks the depth of hard science, math, and problem-solving that the book version delves into.

By giving my Astronomy students the opportunity to read the captivating and educational book version of "The Martian", you will help them develop a deeper understanding of planetary exploration, the challenges faced by living in outer space, and a general STEM-focused approach to problem-solving.

The book offers excellent examples of creative and mathematical thinking that get the protagonist out of life-or-death situations, and pushes students not only to understand the technical aspects of scientific equipment and Mars' climate, but also how to approach problems logically and with mathematical rigor. My eager and motivated students will be even more invested in their investigations of the solar system with this awesome book in their hands.
