Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Ever wanted to see the expendable tongue of a frog? Or find bugs and beetles in their stomachs? Ever wondered how your body is different to that of a frog? Dissecting frogs is a good way to teach comparative physiology.

I teach an AP Biology class, and also a class of 12th Grade seniors with an interest in medicine, nursing or simple biology and physiology.

Most of them come from low-income families living in the inner neighborhoods of Los Angeles. For the most part they are very motivated and very willing to perform well, which is why I feel I must do my best to provide the best possible teaching experience.

My Project

In my physiology class I teach the various systems that make up the human body, but I also like to spend some time comparing systems between various organisms. Pigs have very similar bodies to humans, so having the students dissect both a pig and a frog allows them to see the differences first hand. In many cases the frog's last meal of beetles or bugs can be found inside their digestive tract, so frogs can also be used to cover material regarding food webs and feeding relations.

Students consistently rank the dissections as the best part of the course.

Nothing beats a hands-on dissection of a real specimen, and students really develop an interest for the organism being dissected. By offering frogs I can have them dissect two animals, not just one, and then I can have them compare the physiology of both organisms.
