Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach an enthusiastic class of first graders in an English as a New Language classroom. Students in my class are curious, compassionate, and ravenous readers. They have varied interests from playing sports and video games to learning about the weather and animals.
As English language learners, books are so important to my students and are truly valued.
Almost 80% of the students at my school qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Many of my students do not have access to books at home and rely on our classroom library to read high-quality books.
My students understand that they have a voice in their learning. They learn to become collaborative, critical thinkers who are not afraid of taking risks and making mistakes to grow!
My Project
My students go book shopping in our classroom library and are able to choose their own books to read every week. This project will revitalize our library by incorporating new books that reflect the diversity of cultures and families in our classroom.
By replenishing these book titles in our classroom library, my students will be able to read brand new books that aren't taped together and worn out!
I have chosen books that are high interest for this age group. I have added new series that feature characters that reflect my students' experiences, such as Katie Woo, Max and Zoe, and Pedro.
By adding these books to my classroom library, you will make book shopping day the most exciting day for my students! They will flourish as readers, and more importantly, they will develop a true love of reading.
