Adding Color to Ceramic Pieces

Help me give my students a chance to add color and expressions to their ceramic sculptures with underglazes.

My Students

My students come from diverse backgrounds of working-class families. These teenagers live in and around Oakland. Many of my students are taking their first or second art class and are very eager to see what it has to bring.

Within my classroom many students are hard working and in need of a class to support their work ethic, regardless of their ability to learn the same way or to speak the same language as their peers.

My classroom is a mix of all high school ages and students who may be learning English, who only speak English, students who may have learning disabilities, or even have physical disabilities. With this the needs of every student may differ yet all are working together to be successful in my classroom.

My Project

In this year's sculpture class the students have been begging for more clay-based projects, they love sculpture and building with their hands. My goal is to have students build more vessels that they can keep and use when done.

We should be making ceramic mugs or cups for use.

These vessels will need to be glazed in order to be used and food safe. With these underglazes, students will be able to put their color theory knowledge into visual practice. The goal is for their mug or cup to have a theme or concept represented in them as they construct and design them.

Also, students will be researching and then building a clay mask based on different cultures or time periods. Color and design will be a very important part of this assignment to ensure that their ideas are fully depicted and their research is accurately supported. Having the option to add color to their clay pieces will make all the difference in my student’s finished artworks.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
